Personal:

I'm married with four children.  I run with a group called the Bingham Butt-Kickers, a really fun group of people that gets me out running early on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and sometimes Saturdays.   I recently found out that I've been running with poor form for many years, which has probably contributed to some nagging aches and pains I've had for years.  One of my big goals now is to be able to run with better form and to have running feel more effortless.  I hope this won't take too many years to achieve!

Today we met at the SJ park to run our 5k's--only two this time.  It felt a little like a vacation after we ran four the last two times we've done this.  My goal going in--actually my goal all summer--has been to hit in the 22 minute range on these 5ks.  Just some history:  last winter, when I think I was at my all time low with running, I barely made it under 30 minutes on one of these.  I wanted to blame the cold and the snow on the ground, but I knew it went deeper than that, so to speak.  I knew I had some problems that needed to be corrected if I ever wanted to run these 5K's well again.  Eventually some things got taken care of, the most important being my thyroid, and the times came down.  However, I still was not able to hit that magical 22 number despite what I thought were my best efforts.  My best time before today was 23:09 which I did in June.  Lately, all the times have been in the 23 to 25 minute range.  Today we started south, and I tried to keep things relaxed and fairly comfortable, focusing on keeping my form good.  I ran that in 23:30.  Good, but still not where I wanted to be.  The second we ran north, and this time I ran with Nancy R. the entire way.  I think having her by me kept me going strong, and, what do you know, I finally made it into the 22 range, 22:31 to be precise.  Nice to reach a goal.  The best part is I didn't feel totally wiped out at the end, I felt like if I had to, I could have done two more 5K's.  However, I'm glad I didn't have to.  Tapering is nice.

I never would have gone that fast today, I was trying not to fall to far behind you! Thanks for pushing me and thanks for everything! I feel prepared for SG because of you guys!

I am glad you did not have to do two more either! Nice speed, I am so happy you hit your goal.

Cheryl - interesting, how much of speed is mental? Don't give into the mind telling you it is too tough, slow down. I often think top runners are top runners as much because of the mental as the physical training. This may be a break thru 5k for you.

Great job Cheryl. You are such a dedicated hard working runner.

Brent--I do feel like it was a breakthrough run in a way. I've run this particular route this fast before, but it's been at least a year and a half, and I think today it felt easier than it did back then. I've been working on correcting some form flaws I have and I think that has helped a lot.

Nancy--thank you for always making nice comments on my blog, I appreciate that.

Nancy and Kelli--I think we're prepared for St. George. I'm getting pretty excited about it. It will be fun to see how everyone does. All the BBKer's will do great!

All inidicators point to a good race for you next Saturday! I agree with Brent that there is a lot of mental aspects to running. That's why these training runs that give us confidence are so important.

Peggy--you're right. It helps to have some confidence building runs right before the marathon. Let's bring it on, I think we're all ready to run well next week!

ALL of the BBKers WILL be awesome. And, since you will all finish before me, I expect a HUGE crowd cheering me in!!!! That will be cool.

Kelli--I'm not sure about that, I think you may be cheering many of us in! I think you're running really well, and you know how adrenaline kicks in at a race, you could have a better race than you think right now.

From Kelli on Mon, Sep 28, 2009 at 17:28:56 from 71.219.96.151

That is my hope right now---a better race than I think I can do. BUT, I have my BQ and all that really matters is that Scott gets his so that we can go together next year and finally have a vacation away from the kids!! So, if i bomb it, oh well!!! Next year will be my year.

I will not be seeing you before the race, so GOOD LUCK!!!! I wish you the best and I know all of your training and form changing and so on will really benefit you this year. I am very excited to see how it goes for you!!!
