Personal:

I'm married with four children.  I run with a group called the Bingham Butt-Kickers, a really fun group of people that gets me out running early on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and sometimes Saturdays.   I recently found out that I've been running with poor form for many years, which has probably contributed to some nagging aches and pains I've had for years.  One of my big goals now is to be able to run with better form and to have running feel more effortless.  I hope this won't take too many years to achieve!

I thought I'd give the group a try this morning.  I got there at 5:30, but my foot was hurting, so I skipped out on early miles and just tried to warm up and get to where the blister wasn't bothering me.  After a little running on the Bingham football field, things felt pretty good.  The plan was to do a 6.5 mile tempo run.  I really wanted to practice staying relaxed on this run and having a better experience from last week.  I kept thinking "loose and relaxed, stay loose and relaxed."  I'd give myself about a B minus on accomplishing that.  I felt more relaxed than last week, but still was tightening up more than I wanted.  It's hard to change something that has become very ingrained.  Patience, I must have patience.  And lots of practice.  Anyway, overall it was a fun run, I enjoyed talking with Jody and then Michelle M. at the end when we added on extra at the track.  By that point I had stiffened up from standing around too long, so there was no "loose and relaxed" going on during that run.  By the way, the Garmin says the avg. pace for the main tempo run was 8:10.

It was great to catch up with you today! That is a super speedy pace for the tempo portion. Have a great weekend!

Cheryl, is the 8:02 your goal pace for STG? How do you determine your tempo pace.

Brent--I really don't know how to determine tempo pace. I just try to keep the effort "comfortably hard." What do you think it should be if you marathon goal pace is 8:00?

I do not think you need any more precision than "comfortably hard" most of the time. The only exception would be if you have some special inside knowledge. E.g. you know through past experience that one pace is more effective than another for your body. But in that case, you would need to throw away your Garmin and use the road marks. Which I would recommend regardless in any case.

Cheryl, everyone is a little diffent, during my years or running, always tried to build up to a 15 to 16 miler at goal race pace. It was a good mental confidence builder, running it solo, for the marathon. There are many coaches and a gazillion articles on tempo pace. I would read a few of them and see what might work best for you. Tempos can be tricky in regards to injuries, fatigue, if your racing and doing speed workouts also.
